Miao is one of 55 Chinese ethnic minority groups, living in the mountains of southwest China. Batik is a 2,000-year-old fabric dyeing method using wax, it is an integral part of Miao's ancient culture and history. Kuen Kuen Liu Spichiger, the writer and illustrator of the book, who learned the craft and history of batik from the Miao's people and created a 6-meter long batik scroll during her 5 months residency in southwest China. She was deeply inspired by the Miao's people love and respect for nature. Bee Umbrella Sky is a folktale retold by Kuen Kuen about the origin of batik.
